ISLAMABAD: Dr. Kazim Niaz, Federal Secretary for Economic Affairs, has been appointed as Pakistan’s Executive Director (ED) at the World Bank in Washington, reliable sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The position had remained vacant since the resignation of Dr. Syed Tauqir Hussain Shah earlier this year. Dr. Shah, who had been appointed in November 2023 for a four-year term, stepped down at the request of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to rejoin the government as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. He later resigned from that role as well and now serves as Advisor to the Prime Minister.

Dr. Niaz, a seasoned BPS-22 officer, previously served as Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (2019–2021) and Gilgit-Baltistan. He is also associated with the Sabawoon Volunteers Association, a welfare group providing free education to underprivileged children.

Hailing from Rajar in Charsadda district, Dr. Niaz is the son of the late Prof. Jahanzeb Niaz, a distinguished Pashto author and researcher who passed away in 2015.

The World Bank ED role carries a lucrative tax-free package of about $272,980 annually. A formal notification of Dr. Niaz’s appointment is expected after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s return from China.
